Church Starlite Squares is the oldest square dance club
in Kanawha Valley. Formed in October of 1956 the club presently has about forty members,
and has added round dancing between tips to its dance agenda. The monthly dances normally have
a large turnout of both members and visitors. Dances are held in the church gymnasium
located at 4615 MacCorkle Avenue, SE, Charleston (Kanawha City). The monthly dance is held
on the second Friday from 7:30 until 10:30 pm. Click here to see our schedule. The club employs
a variety of square dance callers and round dance cuers from West Virginia and surrounding
states. A few nationally known callers are scheduled each year. Dance donations are normally
$5.00 per. person.
During the summer months of June, July and August casual attire is encouraged. The remainder of the year, September through May, regular square dance attire requested. Square dance attire ranges from the full western wear of square dance dresses over layers of crinoline slips to prairie skirts and boots. Club dress colors are royal blue and white with yellow accents. Each fall the club conducts beginning square dance lessons. The club's instructor Tom Poe, will be conducting class in a different format with beginner instruction intermixed with experienced dancing. During the entire series of lessons student dancers are assisted by experienced club members called "angels", making the learning process much easier. Lessons which will be conducted on Tuesdays between 7:00 & 9:00 pm. begin September 4, 2007 and run through mid May, 2008. The first two classes are free; thereafter, the suggested donation is $4.00 per. week per. person. All persons are invited to attend class. After class are completed you will be invited to join Starlite Squares. Experienced dancers are invited to visit and join at any time.
